I believe that all Vermonters have the basic human right to consult with their families and physicians in private about their own health-care decisions, including those made at the end of life. Vermont has a long tradition of protecting privacy rights and of expanding freedoms, and I support that tradition.
As a minister in my community for over 20 years, I have been with Vermonters in life and death. I know that Vermonters want to be able to hold to their core beliefs as they reach the end of life. We need to ensure that all Vermonters are afforded the chance to preserve their dignity by directing their own end-of-life care.
For the past four years, the legislature has been carefully studying the positive track record of the Oregon choice-in-dying law. For the few terminally-ill, mentally competent Vermonters that would utilize the law, and the many that would be comforted by knowing it was there, I believe a patient-directed dying law would be a valuable addition to the end-of-life choice continuum in Vermont. With proper safeguards included, I would support patient-directed dying legislation.
