Governor Jim Douglas has unveiled a property tax relief plan that he says will save state taxpayers roughly $35 million a year. The key to the plan is a cap on local school spending. Democratic leaders say the proposal isn't an effective way to lower property tax burdens across the state. |

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Scudder Parker says he has strong concerns about Governor Jim Douglas's decision to send Vermont National Guard troops to beef up security along the Mexican border. Douglas says the mission is appropriate because it's voluntary and will substitute for the annual 2 weeks of training that all soldiers are required to do. |
