  Winds of change
Letter to the Editor of The Bennington Banner; Tuesday, July 25, 2006.

WEST DOVER – I am a new Vermont resident. I've lived here on a full-time basis for only a few months. In other words, I am a "flatlander," a term I've heard countless times already in the approximately 20 months that I've been visiting and living in this beautiful state. It was love that brought me here to Vermont - not love for the state, although I certainly feel that now, but love for a Vermont resident, a man that I ended up marrying recently. Now I am a full-time resident, a real, working, tax-paying Vermonter.

  What's the fuss over wind?
Editorial Printed in The Brattleboro Reformer; Friday, July 21, 2006.

BRATTLEBORO – The state of Vermont this week handed out about $1.3 million for various renewable energy projects. That money is coming mostly from Entergy Nuclear Vermont Yankee, which promised to fund some renewable energy initiatives in exchange for getting permission to store its nuclear waste in concrete "dry casks."

The job description for great agency chief
Editorial printed in The Burlington Free Press; Friday, July 21, 2006.

BURLINGTON – Wanted: skilled CEO to turn around struggling business. That's the advertisement that Gov. Jim Douglas should have run to find the best secretary to head the Agency of Transportation.

BURLINGTON – Just before the heavens reopened and spilled more rain out, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Scudder Parker was out on Church Street in Burlington this afternoon showing off his new "people-powered engine."

WCAX Channel 3 News; Tuesday, June 20, 2006; by Kristin Carlson.

  What was Douglas thinking?
Letter to the Editor of The Vermont Guardian; Friday, June 16, 2006

Why did Gov. Jim Douglas refuse to sign S.314, An Act Related to Early Childhood Education? By allowing the bill to become law without his signature, the governor hides from the public his reasoningg. What are his objections to the bill, and why won’t he explain them?

  We like wind
Letter to the Editor of The Vermont Guardian; Friday, June 16, 2006

People may think that because voters in Londonderry and Manchester voted around Town Meeting Day against proposed windfarms in their communities, this must be the way most Vermonters feel about the issue. But in a recent poll, more than 80 percent said they strongly supported using some of our ridgelines for well-sited windfarms, or at least would find them acceptable. The residents of Readsboro, just south of the one existing windfarm at Searsburg between Bennington and Brattleboro, voted over 4 to 1 in favor of the proposed expansion of that windfarm onto land in Readsboro.

Vt. to seek disaster aid for dairy farmers for wet spring
Associated Press Newswires; Tuesday, June 13, 2006

The state will seek federal disaster assistance for dairy farmers whose crops have been hampered by heavy rains, Gov. James Douglas said Tuesday.

  Stifling energy view
Brattleboro Reformer; Tuesday, June 13, 2006

It looks like the Glebe Mountain wind project in Londonderry is dead.

According to a report in the Vermont Guardian, Catamount Energy, the developer of the proposed project, is shelving its plans indefinitely to focus on projects in other states. The apparent final straw for Catamount Energy was a 31-page set of guidelines issued in April by the state's Agency of Natural Resources. It would require developers to do detailed engineering and wildlife studies and more post-construction monitoring.

  Unwelcome Move
Letter to the Editor of Seven Days; Wednesday, June 7, 2006

My partner and I moved to Vermont in the first days of January 2004. We came because we are a same-sex couple, and I am a transgender person as well. We were looking for security and legal recognition of our relationship, and thanks to Vermont’s civil-union law, we found it here, and were delighted to call this our new home. That is, until Governor Douglas vetoed the Gender Identity and Expression law...

Critics: Vermont Policies Stifle Flow of Information
Rutland Herald; Tuesday, March 14, 2006

In one of the monthly opinions he and his deputy authored in the 1980s, then-Secretary of State James Douglas included this ringing defense of the principle of access to public documents.

Sending Mixed Messages on Public Access
Times Argus; Monday, March 13, 2006

Gov. James Douglas' chief spokesman signaled in an interview that the governor is softening his stance defending a newly asserted and potentially broad exemption from Vermont's law requiring public access to government documents.

  Douglas' Leadership Inadequate, Ineffectual
Rutland Herald; Sunday, March 12, 2006

Gov. James Douglas demonstrates no skill as a statesman, no vision as a leader and no courage as an advocate. On affordable housing, student scholarships, healthcare, energy and agriculture he demonstrates no ability to identify, hear and utilize the many skilled Vermonters who have cultivated their knowledge of these areas for a lifetime. If he cannot draw upon the skilled people of Vermont, or even demonstrate an awareness of them, how can he possibly navigate the future for Vermont?
